Mondelez International has sacked 12 palm oil suppliers from its supply chain.
This follows from recent public outcry, particularly in the UK, about the deforestation caused by the harvesting of the palm kernel.
The confectioner who owns brands including Oreo, Toblerone and Belvita, is aiming for full sustainability and transparency, and has found breaches in the supply chain.
In order to identify high-risk areas and limit the rate of deforestation, the firm requires suppliers to provide, group-wide concession maps, and to comply with time-bound plans to end deforestation. The failure to comply with these terms has led to the firms being omitted.
